Non-Western Approaches to Sanctions: Global Perspectives

Sanctions have become the policy instrument of choice in support of a variety of foreign policy goals across the globe. Most of the literature about sanctions, however, is written from a sender perspective (typically from Western senders). This workshop at the University of Trento in Italy from December of 2022 brought together scholars from Europe, North America, South America, Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia to discuss narratives on sanctions from across the globe. Participants from both sanctions sending countries in Europe and North America and sanctions receiving countries like Iran and Russia were joined by others from emerging powers to discuss contemporary contestations of narratives around sanctions.
